What is stress

Stress can simply be defined as the body’s response to events that upset its balance, burden it, or exceed our ability to cope effectively. We refer to the disturbing events as stressors. Their source can be both physical (e.g. noise, overcrowding, illness, natural disasters) and social (e.g. unemployment, pregnancy and childbirth, family problems, loss of a loved one, crime).

The effect of living under constant stress

Stress affects both our emotional and physiological processes. In a stressful situation we can observe:

  • increase in blood pressure
  • increased heart rate
  • increase in blood glucose
  • an increase in muscle tone,
  • fast, shallow breathing
  • sharpening of the senses,
  • dry mouth
  • increased sweat gland activity,
  • accelerated intestinal motility,
  • increased smooth muscle tone (e.g. stomach spasm),
  • characteristic changes in EEG (brain activity), – characteristic changes in endocrine economy.
  • At the emotional level, there may be: a drug, anxiety, increased alertness – irritability, aggression.

Coping with stress is a very broad issue, but you can give some basic tips:

believe in yourself – remember that whether you think bad or good about yourself depends a lot on what you have learned about yourself in life, and that you can greatly strengthen your faith in yourself. So give yourself a chance and learn positive things about yourself,

treat difficulties as challenges – almost regardless of the difficulties we face, we can always learn something and find energy in it, for no reason one says “what does not kill you will strengthen you”,

be active – physical activity is one of the simple and effective ways to manage stress. Are u tense go jogging, meet and respect your feelings – experienced emotions are important tips from our body and mind. Try to listen to them and treat them as allies,

take advantage of help – talking to a loved one about what is difficult can sometimes radically change the perception of difficulties. You can also seek the advice of a psychologist or psychotherapist.

Maintain a healthy diet

Adherence to a healthy diet is crucial to relieving stress. Everything in the body is connected. In addition, it can help counteract stress by strengthening the immune system and lowering blood pressure.

It is recommended to include meal preparation in your daily routine and focus on healthy, full foods. You should drink plenty of water and avoid skipping meals or eating too much. Oranges, spinach, complex carbohydrates, fatty fish, black tea, pistachios and avocados are just some of the products that have a positive effect on stress. Everyone’s body is different, so if you are unsure of what constitutes a “healthy” diet for you, talk to a primary care physician or meet with a dietitian.
